The BMA Standard 11 course is available exclusively to BMA employees and contractors and provides you with the essential knowledge and skills to work safely on BMA surface mining sites.
This mandatory induction covers BMA site-specific safety requirements, hazard identification, risk management processes, and core risk assessment skills. Successful completion is your gateway to safely accessing and working on surface coal and metalliferous mine sites across Queensland.

The Standard 11 course blends the latest theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical training, ensuring you gain the skills needed for safe operations on mine sites. Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and six accredited units of competency.

RIIRIS201E - Conduct local risk control.
RIICOM201E - Communicate in the workplace.

BMA may require you to refresh these competencies every 5 years.
In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.
Complete at your own pace within 30 days. You will be assessed via a mix of online quiz questions.
Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete (based on the information you learned in your online theory module).
You will need to pass both steps in order to successfully complete the course.

To enrol in this course, students must:
Provide a BMA Employee ID or Service Contractor (SC) number and your BMA site.
Be at least 15 years of age.
Have basic computer skills and access to the internet.
Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments.
Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
Throughout the duration of your course, you can access experienced industry professionals and support staff to guide you through the program. Our trainers are dedicated to helping you succeed and will be available to answer your questions and provide feedback on your progress. They will provide you with the guidance and support you need to fully understand the course material, as well as offer suggestions for further learning opportunities.

You must complete an online theory module first within 30 days of enrolment (this is self-paced and can be completed in a few hours). You then book in for your 1-day practical training and final assessment.
The BMA Standard 11 course itself does not expire, as it comprises nationally-recognised units of competency. Once you successfully complete it, you are issued a Statement of Attainment, which remains valid indefinitely.
However:
Some employers (including BMA) may require refresher training or re-assessment every 2-5 years to ensure your knowledge is up to date with current legislation and site procedures. Please speak to your supervisor for more information.
