The working environment may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.
The unit is suitable for use in the following situations:
- confined spaces
- enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
- hot work
- storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
- testing as part of issuing a work permit
- monitoring as part of working under a work permit
- open areas
- holding the gas tester by hand
- lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at this time.
Course Funding

Course Delivery
At Civil Safety, we understand that time matters. Therefore we have adapted our Gas Test Atmospheres course so you are only required for 1 day at one of our training facilities. This is because we use a blended delivery method, where you complete the theory component online anytime before coming in for your practical training face to face.
During your studies, you will receive feedback after each assessment and the Trainer/Assessor will be available to discuss the feedback or provide additional assistance or direction as appropriate.

Course Locations
Gas Test Atmospheres is available at all of our training facilities - click here for location details. The course can also be offered onsite where one of our trainers can come to you, along with 24/7 training options. Ask one of our friendly staff for further information.
Course Requirements
- Students must provide photographic identification (i.e. driver’s licence, passport).
- Enclosed shoes
- Be at least 15 years of age;
- Have completed Year 10 in the Australian school system or equivalent; and
- A sufficient level of language, literacy and numeracy is required for students to be able to complete the assessments.
It is a condition of enrolment in any nationally recognised training (accredited) programme that you supply the training organisation with a valid unique student identifier (USI). If you don’t already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
Course Refreshers
The Gas Test Atmospheres Refresher period for this course is five years, a shorter period may be required where industry/company requirements are applicable. Individuals can refresh their competencies anytime within the five years in line with these industry/company-specific requirements.
