Operate and Maintain a Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Vehicle (RIIVEH305F) - Course Information
The Operate and Maintain a 4WD course is designed for people who want to develop the skills required to safely operate and maintain 4WD vehicles in workplace environments.
You’ll learn how to:
Access, interpret, and apply relevant documentation to confirm work requirements
Plan trips and operate vehicles while minimising environmental impact and respecting other land users
Conduct pre-operational checks, including vehicle condition, equipment, and safety requirements
Safely operate 4WD vehicles across a variety of terrains using correct driving techniques
Identify hazards and assess risks in off-road environments
Perform minor repairs and respond to vehicle or track issues during operation
Carry out routine maintenance, including checking fluids, changing tyres, and completing vehicle reports
Course Delivery and Assessment
In order to provide you with the best learning outcomes possible, this course is delivered via a mix of online learning and face-to-face training. You will be assigned an experienced Trainer Assessor for support throughout your course.
Step 1 - Complete theory module online (within 30 days)
The online modules are self-paced and include assessments (quizzes, written tasks, or short scenario-based exercises) to ensure understanding.
Step 2 - Attend 1 day face-to-face training (appx 4 hours)
Your trainer will give you practical tasks to complete based on the information you’ve learned in your online theory module.
You will need to pass both steps in order to successfully complete the course.
Who Should Complete This Course?
This course is ideal for people who require the skills to safely operate a 4WD vehicle in the workplace or remote environments.
You should consider this course if you:
Are working (or planning to work) in mining, construction, civil, or remote industries
Need to operate a 4WD vehicle as part of your job role
Have little or no formal 4WD training and want to gain nationally recognised certification
Want to improve your safety, confidence, and capability when driving off-road
Are required by your employer to hold the RIIVEH305F unit
It’s also suitable for:
Entry-level workers looking to get a foot in the door in mining or civil roles
Existing workers who use 4WDs but haven’t completed formal training
Supervisors or team leaders responsible for vehicle safety and compliance
Course Outcome
Upon successful completion of this refresher course, you will be awarded a nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment for:
RIIVEH305F - Operate and Maintain a 4WD
This certification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and can support applications for higher roles in safety and compliance.
Career Pathways
Mining & Resources: Site operator, maintenance support worker, and safety supervisor
Construction & Civil Infrastructure: Construction operator, civil works technician, and site supervisor
Utilities & Industrial Services: 4WD operator, mobile plant support worker, and service technician.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements; however, students will need:
Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments
A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
