Gain the high-level skills required to operate slewing cranes up to 100 tonnes
The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C1 - up to 100 tonne) course provides comprehensive training in the safe and effective operation of larger slewing cranes used across major construction, mining and heavy-industry sites. Throughout the course, you’ll develop skills in lift planning, crane setup, load estimation, boom and counterweight configuration, operational safety, signalling and complex lifting procedures. You’ll work through real-world lifting scenarios to build your confidence and competence in high-risk environments.
This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for operators progressing from smaller crane classes and looking to take the next step into higher-capacity crane operations.

Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C1) - up to 100 tonnes (TLILIC0021) - Course Information
The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C1) course is designed for operators progressing into high-capacity crane operations. You’ll gain practical training in planning and executing complex lifts using slewing cranes with a capacity of up to 100 tonnes.
This course focuses on advanced crane setup, operational control, risk management, and compliance - skills essential for large-scale construction and industrial lifting environments. You’ll learn about:
Legislation & Compliance: High-capacity crane WHS requirements, licensing obligations, and workplace safety standards.
Advanced Crane Setup: Assessing ground conditions, configuring counterweights, deploying outriggers, and preparing the crane for high-load tasks.
Pre-Operational Safety Checks: Inspecting structural elements, hydraulic systems, boom configurations, and rigging equipment.
Load Chart Mastery: Interpreting advanced operating limits, dynamic loading, radius limitations, and boom configurations for heavy lifts.
Crane Operation: Executing safe crane movements - precise slewing, telescoping, hoisting, and placing heavy loads under controlled conditions.
Complex Lift Execution: Performing intricate lifts including high-radius lifts, blind lifts, and lifts with challenging environmental or structural constraints.
Post-Operational Shutdown: Completing thorough shutdown, inspections, and crane securing procedures.
Team Coordination: Working seamlessly with lifting teams, riggers, signalers, and supervisors during high-risk operations.
Emergency Procedures: Responding to critical incidents such as hydraulic failures, unforeseen load movement, or structural hazards.
By the end of the course, you'll be ready to operate slewing cranes up to 100 tonnes safely, efficiently, and in line with all industry and legislative requirements.
Course Delivery and Assessment
Due to the high-risk nature of crane operation, the Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C1) course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
High Risk Work Licences
After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.
If you are one of our corporate clients, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $160 (which includes the WorkSafe fee).
Who Should Complete This Course?
This course is ideal for individuals who are:
Working in environments where large lifting operations are required, including major construction, mining, shutdowns, and heavy industrial projects
Already holding a C6 licence (or equivalent experience) and progressing toward operating larger slewing cranes
Required to hold a High Risk Work Licence (C1 class) to operate cranes up to 100 tonnes
Seeking the skills, knowledge, and certification to manage complex lifts and coordinate safely with rigging and dogging teams
This course is a key step in advancing toward high-capacity crane operations, giving you the practical expertise needed for demanding lifting environments and preparing you for future progression into the CO class.
Course Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for:
TLILIC0021 - Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C1) - up to 100 tonnes
This unit is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and contributes to the skills and competencies required for slewing mobile crane work. Successful completion can support your application for the relevant High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) class, subject to meeting the applicable licensing requirements and assessment processes.
Career Pathways
Completing the C1 Slewing Mobile Crane course opens career opportunities in large-scale construction, mining, and industrial projects:
Construction and Civil Works: Senior crane operator, site supervisor, project foreperson, rigging coordinator
Mining and Resources: High-risk work coordinator, crane supervisor, plant operator
Facilities Management and Maintenance: Maintenance supervisor, access systems coordinator, industrial maintenance team leader
Events and Entertainment: Senior stage rigger, crane signal supervisor, heavy-lift event operator
This course prepares you to manage complex lifting tasks, supervise teams, and perform high-capacity crane operations safely and efficiently.
