The Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (AHC31424) provides the skills and knowledge to work safely and effectively in natural area management and environmental conservation roles. You’ll learn how to implement practical solutions that protect, restore, and enhance Australia’s unique ecosystems.
Throughout this qualification, you’ll gain hands-on experience in tasks such as plant identification, seed collection, revegetation, weed and pest management, and soil and water conservation. You’ll also develop an understanding of ecological sustainability and how to follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures in outdoor environments.
Through a combination of theory and practical learning, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to:
Identify, monitor, and manage native plants and wildlife
Implement land restoration and revegetation projects
Control weeds, pests and invasive species safely and effectively
Collect, record, and interpret environmental data
Operate and maintain equipment used in conservation fieldwork
Apply sustainable work practices to support ecosystem health
Training is designed around real-world conservation and ecosystem projects, giving you the confidence, practical experience, and teamwork skills needed to succeed in environmental management and land restoration roles.
The Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management is a flexible, blended delivery course designed to fit around your work and lifestyle, giving you up to 12 months to complete your studies at your own pace. The theory component of the course is delivered online, while practical training is conducted face-to-face, allowing you to develop advanced hands-on skills under the guidance of experienced trainers. Our trainers will demonstrate key techniques and provide personalised feedback and guidance, helping you build both confidence and competence.
Assessment is competency-based, meaning you’ll be evaluated on your ability to perform tasks and apply knowledge in realistic workplace scenarios. This includes:
Practical demonstrations of skills and workplace procedures
Observation of tasks in simulated or real environments
Written or online assessments to confirm your understanding of key concepts
A blended approach ensures you don’t just learn the theory - you’ll be able to apply your skills safely and effectively in a variety of rural and agricultural roles.
Graduates of this course can pursue a range of rewarding roles in the environmental and conservation sector, including:
Conservation Officer - Implement and monitor conservation programs across parks and reserves.
Land Care Worker - Participate in land rehabilitation, revegetation, and sustainable land management projects.
Park Ranger or National Parks Assistant - Support the management and protection of natural areas and wildlife.
Environmental Field Officer - Conduct field surveys, habitat assessments, and environmental monitoring.
Community Conservation Project Coordinator - Assist in planning and running community-based environmental initiatives.

Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments

Career Start provides eligible Queenslanders with government-subsidised training to help them begin a Certificate III qualification, and potentially an apprenticeship or traineeship, selected from priority or emerging industries.
