The Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (AHC21024) builds the core skills needed to begin working or volunteering in the conservation and land management sector.
Through a mix of theory and practical learning, you’ll develop the ability to assist in land rehabilitation, control weeds and pests, care for native plants, and maintain natural environments.
You’ll learn how to:
Work safely and sustainably in outdoor environments
Identify and care for plants and natural areas
Carry out basic revegetation and restoration activities
Follow environmental work procedures
Operate and maintain tools and equipment
Support conservation projects as part of a team
This course is highly practical, giving you real experience working in natural settings such as parks, reserves, and community landcare sites.
The Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management is a flexible, blended delivery course designed to fit around your work and lifestyle, giving you up to 12 months to complete your studies at your own pace. The theory component of the course is delivered online, while practical training is conducted face-to-face, allowing you to develop advanced hands-on skills under the guidance of experienced trainers. Our trainers will demonstrate key techniques and provide personalised feedback and guidance, helping you build both confidence and competence.
Assessment is competency-based, meaning you’ll be evaluated on your ability to perform tasks and apply knowledge in realistic workplace scenarios. This includes:
Practical demonstrations of skills and workplace procedures
Observation of tasks in simulated or real environments
Written or online assessments to confirm your understanding of key concepts
A blended approach ensures you don’t just learn the theory - you’ll be able to apply your skills safely and effectively in a variety of rural and agricultural roles.
Graduates of this course can pursue a range of rewarding roles in the environmental and conservation sector, including:
Conservation Officer - Implement and monitor conservation programs across parks and reserves.
Land Care Worker - Participate in land rehabilitation, revegetation, and sustainable land management projects.
Park Ranger or National Parks Assistant - Support the management and protection of natural areas and wildlife.
Environmental Field Officer - Conduct field surveys, habitat assessments, and environmental monitoring.
Community Conservation Project Coordinator - Assist in planning and running community-based environmental initiatives.

Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication)
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments

This course is approved under Career Start, the Queensland Government’s training initiative replacing the Certificate III Guarantee (effective 1 July 2025). Career Start provides eligible Queenslanders with government-subsidised training to help them begin a Certificate III qualification, and potentially an apprenticeship or traineeship, selected from priority or emerging industries. VETiS Funding - this course is eligible for VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools) funding, which provides eligible secondary school students with the opportunity to undertake nationally-recognised training at little or no cost. VETiS funding helps students gain practical skills and qualifications while completing their senior secondary studies, giving them a head start in rural and agricultural industries.

The Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management course takes approximately 3-6 months to complete. You will be required to complete online learning modules and attend face-to-face training for the practical assessments.

Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments
